CPGA Youth Chess Championship grand finale attracts 185 participants

The Chess Parents & Guardians Association (CPGA) Youth Chess Championship grand finals have successfully kicked off today on Monday 2nd December 2019.

The two-day grand finale that will climax on Tuesday 3rd December is taking place at Sheraton Hotel in Kampala has attracted a total of 185 athletes who qualified from the different five regions across the country.

The participants will compete in six different age groups U8, U10, U12, U14, U16, and U18 respectively and the best three in each category will grab different prizes..

Speaking during the opening day of the grand finale, Mr. Kiwanuka Ssuubi the CPGA Youth Chess Championship Chairman remarked that,

“We are so excited about this event because it has kicked off successfully attracting over 185 participants who increased by 20 from the number that we expected. As CPGA, we think this will help to widely spread and develop the game of chess in Uganda and continuously ‘Create a Generation of Thinkers’ as our theme stands.

The finalists came from different parts of Uganda like Jinja, Kampala, Masaka, Mbarara, and Gulu respectively.

The championship sponsored by Jesa, Stanbic, Sheraton, and Vision Group has been run under the tag; “Creating a Generation of Great Thinkers”, and is aimed at developing and growing the quality of chess-play in Uganda.

Speaking to one of the participants that qualified for the final event, Aine Atubet a scholar at Vine International Christian Academy is optimistic about winning a medal after the eight rounds.

“I’m very happy that I have been able to make it to the finals. I have played very well in the first five rounds and I want to win a gold medal from my category.

Said Atubet who plays in the Under Six category.

Eight rounds will be played with five on day one and three on day two and the best three in each category will grab different prizes.

Prizes like certificates of participation will be awarded to all the athletes who made it to the finals while gold, silver, and bronze medals will be won by the best three winners in the six categories.

The CPGA Youth Chess Championship is sponsored by JESA, Vision Group, Stanbic Bank, and Sheraton Hotel.
