Kizza strike not enough as KCCA bow out of CAF Champions League

  • KCCA 1-1 Petro de Luanda

KCCA FC was denied a chance to play in the group stages of the CAF Champions League after a 1-1 draw with Petro de Luanda on Friday evening.

The final aggregate after two legs was 1-1 but the Kasassiro Boys bowed to Angola’s Petro de Luanda on away goals rule.

The guests had a 1-0 halftime lead off a well -converted penalty by captain Jon Estevao that came after 36 minutes.

KCCA goalkeeper Charles Lukwago brought down fast-moving forward Isaac Mensah in the box and the referee pointed to the spot for Estevao to convert.

From the break, KCCA made changes by bringing Sadat Anaku and Simon Peter Serunkuma on for Herbert Achai and Jackson Nunda.

13 minutes after the restart, KCCA found an equalizer when left-back Kizza Mustafa fired home a Sadat Anaku assist.

The home team tried pressing harder for a winner but all chances went begging. Mike Mutyaba headed few inches over the crossbar while Gift Ali and Serunkuma efforts went wide.

The Kasassiro had two clear penalty appeals towards the climax from handballs but referee Ahmed Imtehaz waved a play on.

The result after the final whistle saw KCCA bow out of the Champions League as Petro de Luanda advanced to the lucrative group stages.

Mike Mutebi’s team will now compete for a slot in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages with an opponent yet to be told.
